StarPort, a leading aviation services company, has completed the first B/E Aerospace E-Z LED lighting retrofit on a Falcon 900. The result is a 30 percent savings in weight; a one-third savings in power; and a reduction in cabin heat and damaging ultra violet (UV) radiation over the original fluorescent system.

Helicopters are as unique as the people who own them, fly them and work on them. Mistakes in design, production, operation or maintenance can create immediate consequences. Owners, operators and maintainers must be vigilant to prevent accidents or even incidents. The Helicopter Association International (HAI) has started a campaign to encourage pilots to just land the damn bird if anything creates uncertainty in safe operations. Pilots can refuse to fly an aircraft or can land the aircraft whenever there is doubt about continued safe flight and landing.

Lorrie Bell, a certified inspector for the ARC-190 radio program, has been named the Rockwell Collins 2013 Volunteer of the Year for her work on behalf of children with mental health issues, and men and women serving in the U.S. military. For the past ten years, Bell has been a devoted volunteer for Tanager Place, a nonprofit organization in Cedar Rapids, IA that provides treatment for children with social and mental health diagnoses.

The Southern California Aviation Association’s (SCAA) Safety Committee announces its new SHARE web portal, and second SHARE Roundtable scheduled for February 27th at Long Beach’s AirFlite. SHARE (Safety Hazard Awareness Reporting & Empowerment) is a program designed by SCAA and powered by Baldwin Aviation to create an open format for dialogue and sharing of safety data.

The National Association of State Aviation Officials (NASAO) announces that Henry M. Ogrodzinski, president and CEO for the last 18 years died Wednesday, January 22. Henry’s two year battle with cancer came to an end at his home on Capitol Hill at the age of 65.

Shell announces it has become the first major oil company to develop a lead-free replacement for Aviation Gasoline (Avgas 100 and 100LL), and will now begin a strict regulatory approvals process. Avgas is one of the last common transportation fuels to contain lead and is used by light aircraft and helicopters. Shell’s new lead-free formulation comes after 10 years of exhaustive R&D, as well as successful initial testing, carried out in the last two months by two original equipment manufacturers (OEMs).

Complacency has been identified as one of the top causes for safety issues and quality escapes. Since we recognize that, why does it remain the top of the list? For one thing, we “accidentally on purpose” keep it there because we are complacent on complacency. I will describe the psychological reasons for this phenomenon. It will be counter-intuitive and run in the face of traditional lines of thinking. First is a statement of clarity: complacency is not a cause.

There might be a small aviation museum nearby, one that is open only a few days a week and is run by unpaid volunteers. Find your past. Drive, fly, walk or visit a Web site. Take your friends or family.
