Jet Aviation St. Louis has developed a WiFi Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for Bombardier Challenger 300, Global Express and Global Express XRS series aircraft, providing customers internet access in their aircraft. The new STC joins existing WiFi STCs for Gulfstream V, Challenger 605, Learjet 40 and Learjet 45 aircraft.

For the past decade or so, radio-frequency identification (RFID) has slowly crept into various aspects of the aerospace, aviation and travel industries. It began (mostly) in the logistics and shipping industries, helping track pallets and shipping containers, and then moved into the supply chain due to efforts by the U.S. Department of Defense and some of the electronics industry. Lately, RFID tags have been supplementing or replacing bar codes on higher-value aircraft parts on newer aircraft models, as well as storing parts records on aircraft.

On December 21, the U.S. aviation industry received notification from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that the final rule for aircraft repair station security will not be approved and published until the fourth quarter of 2012. This notification was prompted after 20 industry leaders sent a letter to DHS Secretary Janet Napolitano asking that the rule, which has been under consideration for eight years, be finalized before the end of 2011.

The National Air Transportation Association (NATA) announces that applications for the 2012 Aviation Maintenance Technician Employer Award Program are now available.
This award program, now in its second year, is designed to recognize companies that employ aviation maintenance technicians (AMT) and encourage and support AMT training. The award is based on the percentage of AMTs employed (directly or indirectly) by a maintenance organization who participate in qualified training events.

The FAA proposes to amend the maintenance regulations by removing from the preventive maintenance category the task of updating databases used in self-contained, front-panel or pedestal-mounted navigation equipment. This change would allow pilots who operate certificated aircraft to update the specified databases and eliminate the requirement for certificated mechanics or repair stations to perform the update. Learjet recently released Advisory Wire AW21-008 stating they will no longer support the R-12 air conditioning systems on Learjet 20/30/50 and 60 series aircraft and they are sanctioning the Steinbach R-134a installation. However, West Star Aviation can install the Steinbach & Associates STC conversion kits for the R12 Air Conditioning systems at their Grand Junction, CO facility, and their certified mechanics have experience installing these kits on all of the affected Learjet models.

AgustaWestland, a Finmeccanica company, announces that the first prototype of the AW189 twin engine 8-ton class helicopter successfully completed its maiden flight on December 21. The aircraft was launched at the Paris Air Show earlier this year and this first prototype made its maiden flight ahead of schedule. AgustaWestland aims to achieve civil certification for the AW189 in 2013 and to start deliveries in early 2014.
