The Aircraft Electronics Association (AEA) announces that the Federal Aviation Administration has extended the comment period for its notice of proposed rulemaking that was published on May 21, which is a proposed rewrite of Part 145. The original deadline for the comment period was set for Aug. 20, but it has now been extended until Nov. 19. AEA joined with other associations in Washington, D.C., to put forward a unified voice and requested an extension to this critical and wide-ranging proposal regarding how AEA members operate their repair station businesses.

When it came time to chose the recipient of D.O.M. magazine’s inaugural Above and Beyond Award, one name quickly rose to the surface. We are proud to announce that Ken MacTiernan has received our 2012 Above and Beyond Award. A plaque was presented to MacTiernan. He will also receive a BK6000 digital borescope that was generously donated by Snap-on Industrial.

The step change is happening in the air transport industry in regards to data communications, Internet technologies being introduced and increased use of software and COTS-based system, which is creating massive opportunities for those new to the industry. Unfortunately, some of these opportunities are for those with less-than-savory goals.

Today, as I sit down to start to write my editorial column for this issue, I can’t help but remember. I don’t have to tell you what day today is. The events that took place 11 years ago today are forever etched in my memory. I can remember that day vividly as if it were yesterday. I had just arrived at the office, and some coworkers told me that an airplane had hit one of the World Trade Center towers. Some images were being posted online and the hole in the tower looked like a small plane had hit it. My first thoughts were, “Why would a pilot be flying there?

Fort Worth, Texas - JSfirm.com manager Jeff Richards reports a record-setting second quarter. "There was a 61-percent increase in the number of aviation jobs being advertised on JSfirm.com during April, May and June of this year, compared to the same period in 2011," says Richards. "In fact, this was the busiest second quarter for job advertisements in our 13-year history. The two main reasons are the recovering economy and hiring companies are coming back to niche aviation sites from expensive 'cost-per-click' sites.

Bethpage, N.Y. - TE Connectivity announces the new RT-555 high-temperature heat shrink tape for commercial aerospace, military and offshore drilling applications. The bi-layer, side-entry, heat-recoverable sealing product shrinks a predetermined percentage upon the application of heat in excess of 428 degrees. Designed to be installed on mounted harnesses and suitable for use in wire harness systems requiring aggressive fluid and high-temperature resistance, the two-layer tape is designed to withstand the high temperatures generally associated with aircraft engines.

The Aero 454 receives data from an aircraft’s Garmin GPS units (430, 530, 650, 750, G900, G1000) and re-transmits it simultaneously to as many as three iPad/tablet devices held by pilots or passengers. It can now also transmit standby frequencies on the SL30/SL40 from a Flight Guide IEFB app Airport Pages.
