Constant Aviation Develops Citation X ADS-B Solution

Constant Aviation, offering full-service maintenance, repair, and overhaul with a nationwide network, announces the completion of its first ADS-B upgrade on a Citation X aircraft. The solution negates the need for the standard LPV prerequisite.

The FAA mandate requires that all aircraft operating in airspace which currently requires a Mode C transponder must be equipped with an approved ADS-B Out system by Jan. 1, 2020. Constant Aviation’s solution to the mandate differs from the manufacturer’s in that it does not require the LPV capability as a prerequisite. “By doing so, we are able to provide a much lower-cost solution to meet the ADS-B mandate. If scheduled concurrently with a maintenance event, we can save the customer cost and downtime in many cases,” says Jim Hehnen, ADS-B program manager. “Many ADS-B installations will require removal of the interior, or at least part of it. If the aircraft is in the hangar for a large inspection, the interior will already be removed, saving the customer interior removal and reinstallation during the ADS-B update.”

“The aviation industry reports there are thousands of aircraft that are affected by this mandate. In order to make the Jan. 1, 2020, deadline, service centers would need to be completing several ADS-B Out installs per day,” says Hehnen. “Aircraft owners that are reluctant to equip and are waiting until the deadline draws near must understand that this approach will overwhelm the system, creating an enormous challenge and strain on repair stations,” Hehnen continues. “Constant Aviation has a dedicated team of technicians that are qualified to perform the installation. We have performed 39 Document 11 inspections and 77 engine changes on the Citation X within the last 36 months.”
