Aspen Avionics Becomes an Official Sponsor of GEICO Skytypers
EAA AirVenture - Oshkosh, WI, July 29, 2014: Aspen Avionics announces that navigation and situational awareness just became a bit easier for the GEICO Skytypers airshow team with the addition of Aspen Avionics’ award-winning Evolution Flight Displays retrofitted into the panels of the team’s SNJ-2s.
“Anyone who has seen the GEICO Skytypers perform knows that these talented pilots require precise performance out of their airplanes,” says Aspen Avionics president and CEO, John Uczekaj. “Now with their new Aspen Avionics displays, their airplanes become even more resourceful during airshows as well as flying from event to event.”
“We are so very proud to be partnering with Aspen Avionics. The Evolution Flight Display is incredible – it give us more confidence as we navigate to and from airshows and provides additional situational awareness during our actual performances,” says Steve Kapur, GEICO Skytyper pilot and team marketing officer.
The GEICO Skytypers perform an 18-minute, low-level precision-flying demonstration featuring maneuvers and formations utilized during WWII, some of which are still used currently by our military.
When skytyping, the team flies their SNJ-2s in a line-abreast formation (side-by- side in a straight line), approximately 250 feet apart. The GEICO Skytyper’s lead aircraft carries a custom-designed computer. The computer commands the smoke systems for each aircraft in the formation – telling it precisely when to release a puff of smoke. The dot matrix letters they create are approximately 1500’ tall and the messages can be as long as six to eight miles.
The GEICO Skytypers will be performing on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday during EAA AirVenture. After AirVenture, the GEICO Skytypers perform at airshows in New Jersey, Virginia, Georgia, and Florida.
